Among the Quranic proofs that faith, when mentioned without qualification, necessarily entails deeds is the saying of the Most High:
“Only those believe in Our signs who, when reminded of them, fall down in prostration and glorify their Lord with praise, and are not arrogant.”
He thus denies faith to anyone other than these. Whoever, when reminded by the Quran, fails to perform the prostration Allah has prescribed for him is not among the believers. The prostrations of the five daily prayers are obligatory by agreement of the Muslims. As for prostration upon recitation, its obligation is disputed. Those who consider it obligatory may cite this verse as evidence, but this is not the place to discuss that issue in detail. This verse is like His saying:
“The believers are only those who believe in Allah and His Messenger, then do not doubt, and strive with their wealth and their lives.”
And His saying:
“The believers are only those whose hearts tremble when Allah is mentioned.”
And His saying:
“The believers are only those who believe in Allah and His Messenger and, when they are with him on a matter of common concern, do not leave until they have asked his permission.”
Further evidence is His saying, Most High:
“Allah has pardoned you. Why did you grant them permission before it became clear to you who was truthful and you knew who the liars were?”
“Those who believe in Allah and the Last Day do not ask your permission to be excused from striving with their wealth and their lives. And Allah knows well those who fear Him.”
“Only those who do not believe in Allah and the Last Day ask your permission, and whose hearts are filled with doubt, so they waver in their doubt.”
This verse is like His saying:
“You will not find a people who believe in Allah and the Last Day showing affection to those who oppose Allah and His Messenger.”
And His saying: “Had they believed in Allah, the Prophet, and what was revealed to him
