, for we ourselves were astray.’ That Day they will share in the punishment. Indeed, this is how We deal with the criminals. Whenever they were told, ‘There is no deity worthy of worship except Allah,’ they grew arrogant and said, ‘Are we really to abandon our gods for a mad poet?’”
Allah Most High also says:
“He will say, ‘Enter the Fire among communities of jinn and mankind who passed away before you.’ Whenever a community enters, it curses its counterpart, until, when they have all gathered there, the last of them will say of the first, ‘Our Lord, these are the ones who led us astray, so give them double punishment in the Fire.’ He will say, ‘Each will have double, but you do not know.’ The first of them will say to the last, ‘You were no better than us, so taste the punishment for what you used to earn.’”
Allah Most High also says:
“When they dispute in the Fire, the weak will say to those who were arrogant, ‘We were your followers; can you then relieve us of any share of the Fire?’ Those who were arrogant will say, ‘We are all in it. Allah has indeed judged between His servants.’”
Allah Most High also says:
“If only you could see the wrongdoers, made to stand before their Lord, exchanging accusations! Those who were oppressed will say to those who were arrogant, ‘Had it not been for you, we would have been believers.’ Those who were arrogant will say to those who were oppressed, ‘Did we turn you away from guidance after it had come to you? Rather, you yourselves were criminals.’ Those who were oppressed will say to those who were arrogant, ‘Rather, it was your plotting by night and day, when you commanded us to disbelieve in Allah and set up equals to Him.’ They will conceal their remorse when they see the punishment. We will place shackles around the necks of those who disbelieved. Will they be recompensed for anything other than what they used to do?”
And His words in the context of the verse:
“Whenever they were told, ‘There is no deity worthy of worship except Allah,’ they grew arrogant.”
