The same applies to the terms “disobedience,” “wickedness,” and “disbelief.” When disobedience to Allah and His Messenger is mentioned without qualification, it includes disbelief and wickedness, as in His words:

“Whoever disobeys Allah and His Messenger will have the Fire of Hell, abiding therein forever.”

Allah Most High also says:

“Such were ʿĀd: they rejected the signs of their Lord, disobeyed His messengers, and followed the command of every obstinate tyrant.”

He described them as disobeying the messengers because their disobedience to Hūd constituted rejection of the messengers as a whole. Their disobedience was thus directed against all the messengers, like the disobedience of those who said:

“So we denied and said, ‘Allah has sent down nothing.’”

It is also like the disobedience of those who denied and turned away. Allah Most High says:

“None will burn in it except the most wretched, who denied and turned away.”

That is, he denied the good and turned away from obeying the command. People are required to believe the messengers in what they report and obey them in what they command.

Likewise, He says concerning Pharaoh:

“But he denied and disobeyed.”

And He says of the disbeliever generally:

“He neither believed nor prayed, but denied and turned away.”

Denial concerns what is reported, while turning away concerns what is commanded. Faith consists in believing the messengers in what they report and obeying them in what they command. Another example is His statement:

“As We sent a messenger to Pharaoh. But Pharaoh disobeyed the messenger.”

The expression “turning away,” in the sense of turning away from obedience, occurs in several passages of the Quran
