Muhājir, from Mujāhid, from Ibn ‘Abbās, who said to his young servants:

“Whoever among you wishes to marry, we will arrange his marriage. None of you commits unlawful sexual intercourse without Allah removing from him the light of faith. If He wills to restore it, He restores it; and if He wills to withhold it, He withholds it.”

Abū Dāwūd al-Sijistānī said: ‘Abd al-Wahhāb ibn Najdah narrated to us: Baqiyyah ibn al-Walīd narrated to us: Safwān ibn ‘Amr narrated to us, from ‘Abd Allāh ibn Rabī‘ah al-Hadramī, who informed him, on the authority of Abū Hurayrah, that he used to say:

“Faith is like a garment belonging to one of you: he sometimes wears it and sometimes takes it off.”

He likewise transmitted it through his chain from ‘Umar. It was also reported from al-Hasan directly from the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, without a Companion named in the chain. In another hadith, Abū Hurayrah reported from the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace:

“When a person commits unlawful sexual intercourse, faith leaves him and becomes like a canopy over him. When he ceases, faith returns to him.”
