Majmu' al-FatawaIbn Taimiya

is as reported in the Sahīh from the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace:

“That is the hypocrite’s prayer! That is the hypocrite’s prayer! That is the hypocrite’s prayer! He watches the sun until, when it is between Satan’s two horns, he rises and pecks out four units of prayer, remembering Allah only a little during them.”

Allah Most High has said:

“Indeed, the hypocrites seek to deceive Allah, but He outwits them. When they stand for prayer, they stand lazily, showing off before people and remembering Allah only a little.”

In the Sunan collections, ‘Ammār reports that the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said:

“A servant may finish his prayer with only half of it recorded for him, or only a third…”—until he said, “…or only a tenth.”

Ibn ‘Abbās said: “You have only that portion of your prayer of which you were mindful.” Although most scholars do not require such a person to repeat his prayer, he is instructed to offer voluntary prayers to make up the deficiency in his obligatory prayer.

It is well known that whoever maintains the prayers with their inward reverent humility and outward actions, and fears Allah as He has commanded, will fulfil the obligations and commit no major sin. Whoever commits major sins—such as unlawful sexual intercourse, theft, drinking wine, or the like—must lose that reverent fear, humility, and light from his heart, even if the foundation of belief remains in it. This is part of the “faith” that is taken from him when he commits a major sin, as the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said:

“The one who commits unlawful sexual intercourse is not a believer while committing it, nor is the thief a believer while stealing.”

For the “God-fearing” are as Allah describes them in His words:

“Indeed, when those who fear Allah are touched by a prompting from Satan, they remember, and at once they see clearly.”

Thus, when a prompting from Satan passes through their hearts,
