But the first wording is better known.
In Abū Saʿīd’s narration:
“I command you to do four things and forbid you four things: worship Allah and associate nothing with Him.”
In the hadith about the branches of faith, he explained faith in terms of this and other things, saying:
“Faith has sixty-odd or seventy-odd branches. The highest is saying, ‘None has the right to be worshipped but Allah,’ and the lowest is removing something harmful from the road. Modesty is a branch of faith.”
It is also authentically reported from him through several chains of transmission, in narrations from Ibn ʿUmar, Ibn Masʿūd, and ʿImrān ibn Husayn, that he said:
“Modesty is a branch of faith.”
He also said:
“None of you believes until I am dearer to him than his child, his father, and all people.”
And he said:
“None of you believes until he loves for his brother what he loves for himself.”
He said:
“By Allah, he does not believe! By Allah, he does not believe! By Allah, he does not believe!”
He was asked, “Who, O Messenger of Allah?”
He replied, “The one whose neighbour is not safe from his harm.”
He said:
“Whoever among you sees an evil, let him change it with his hand. If he cannot, then with his tongue. If he cannot, then with his heart—and that is the weakest level of faith.”
He said:
“Whenever Allah sent a prophet, there were among his people those who followed his guidance and adhered to his sunnah. Then successors arise after them who say what they do not do and do what they have not been commanded to do. Whoever strives against them with his hand is a believer; whoever strives against them with his tongue is a believer; and whoever strives against them with his heart is a believer. Beyond that there is not even a mustard seed’s weight of faith.”
This is reported by Muslim alone. Likewise, Muslim alone reports his words:
“By Him in whose hand is my soul, you will not enter Paradise until you believe, and you will not believe until you love one another. Shall I not direct you to something which, if you do it, will make you love one another?
