He was asked:
Two men disagreed about “the form of heaven and earth”: are they “two spherical bodies”? One said that they are spherical, while the other rejected this view, saying that it has no basis. What is correct?
He answered:
According to Muslim scholars, the heavens are spherical. More than one of the leading scholars of Islam has reported a Muslim consensus on this, including Abū al-Husayn Ahmad ibn Ja‘far ibn al-Munādī, one of the most eminent figures of the second generation of Imam Ahmad’s followers, who authored some four hundred works. Imam Abū Muhammad ibn Hazm and Abū al-Faraj ibn al-Jawzī also reported this consensus.
Scholars have transmitted this from the Companions and their successors through well-known chains of transmission. They have cited evidence for it from Allah’s Book and the Sunnah of His Messenger, discussing it at length on the basis of scriptural evidence, although mathematical proofs have also been adduced.
I know of no recognized Muslim scholar who denied this, apart from a small group of dialecticians who, when they debated the astrologers and refuted the unsound aspects of their doctrine concerning conditions
