Majmu' al-FatawaIbn Taimiya

Volume One
The Book of the Oneness of Allah in Worship

Shaykh al-Islām Ahmad ibn Taymiyyah—may Allah sanctify his soul—said:

In the name of Allah, the Most Merciful, the Especially Merciful.

“All praise is for Allah, who created the heavens and the earth and made darkness and light; yet the disbelievers assign equals to their Lord.”

He knows all that has been, all that is, and all that will be:

“His command, when He wills something, is only to say to it, ‘Be,’ and it is.”

He is the One who

“creates whatever He wills and chooses. They have no choice. Glory be to Allah! Exalted is He above what they associate with Him.”

“He is Allah; there is no deity worthy of worship except Him. All praise belongs to Him in this life and the Hereafter. His is the judgment, and to Him you will be returned.”

Every kind of sign attests to His oneness as God. The perfect craftsmanship within creation reveals His knowledge to His creatures, and the diverse things He has brought into being display His power over His creation. The variety of changing circumstances points to His action according to His established ways. In His mercy, He bestows upon His servants blessings that none but the Lord of the heavens can count. The signs of the praise and commendation He deserves in every circumstance attest to His consummate wisdom.

His servants cannot fully recount His praise; rather, He is as He has praised Himself, by virtue of His names and attributes. His are the qualities of perfection and the attributes of majesty, in which nothing that exists resembles Him. He is the Most Holy, the One free of all imperfection, exalted above anything resembling Him in His qualities of perfection or any defect afflicting Him. Glory be to Him! Exalted is He, far above what the wrongdoers say—He who created
