what you have been given?’

“He will reply, ‘My Lord, let me not be the most wretched of Your creation.’ Allah will laugh at him, and then he will be permitted to enter Paradise. Allah will say, ‘Make your wishes.’ He will make his wishes until he can wish for nothing more. Then Allah will say, ‘What about such and such?’ His Lord will keep reminding him until, when all his wishes are exhausted, Allah will say, ‘You shall have that and as much again.’”

Abū Sa‘īd al-Khudrī said to Abū Hurayrah, may Allah be pleased with them both, “The Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said that Allah said, ‘You shall have that and ten times as much.’”

Abū Hurayrah said, “I remember only these words from the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace: ‘You shall have that and as much again.’”

Abū Sa‘īd said, “I heard him say, ‘You shall have that and ten times as much.’”

In another narration in the Sahīh, it is related that Abū Sa‘īd was with Abū Hurayrah and did not dispute anything in his account until Abū Hurayrah said, “Allah said, ‘That shall be yours, and as much again.’” Abū Sa‘īd al-Khudrī then said, “‘And ten times as much,’ Abū Hurayrah.”

[This hadith is among the most authentic hadiths on the face of the earth. Abū Hurayrah and Abū Sa‘īd agreed … (1) There is no mention in it of seeing Allah until after every community follows what it used to worship] (*).

It has also been narrated through a good chain of transmission from ‘Abdullāh ibn Mas‘ūd, may Allah be pleased with him, that he said:

“Allah will gather the people on the Day of Resurrection.” He said, “Then a caller will proclaim, ‘O people! Would you not be content for your Lord—who created you, fashioned you, and provided for you—to appoint

(1) A blank in the original. (*) Shaykh Nāsir ibn Hamad al-Fahd stated (p. 58): It appears that the blank should read: “on the entire hadith, except for the extent of bliss granted to the last of the people of Paradise to enter it,” or words to that effect. Allah knows best.
