And “meeting” is used of meeting an enemy, a friend, someone beloved, or someone disliked. It may also describe direct physical contact and touching, involving pleasure or pain, as in his saying:

“When the two circumcised parts meet, a full ritual bath becomes obligatory.”

And in the authentic hadith:

“When he sits between her four limbs and the two circumcised parts touch, a full ritual bath becomes obligatory.”

Similar examples include His sayings:

“Indeed, the death from which you flee will surely meet you.”

“So Allah will protect them from the evil of that Day and grant them radiance and joy.”

“Those will be rewarded with the lofty chamber for their patience, and will be received there with greetings and peace.”

One also says that someone has encountered good or encountered evil. The Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said:

“You will encounter favouritism after me, so be patient until you meet me at the Cistern.”

It may be said that “meeting” in such instances includes the meaning of witnessing, as Allah Most High says:

“You had certainly longed for death before you encountered it; now you have seen it.”

This is because a person witnesses these things himself. It has been said that death itself is witnessed and plainly seen; others have said that what is seen are its causes.

The Quran and Sunnah also contain expressions akin to “meeting Allah,” such as His sayings:

“You have certainly come to Us alone, just as We created you the first time.”

“If only you could see when they are made to stand before their Lord. He will say, ‘Is this not the truth?’ They will say, ‘Yes, by our Lord.’”

“They will be presented before your Lord in ranks: ‘You have certainly come to Us just as We created you the first time.’”

“Indeed, your Lord is ever watchful.”

“When he comes to it, he finds it to be nothing, but finds Allah there, who settles his account in full.”

And His saying: “No! There is no
