But in this they are astray, according to both reason and revelation.
There is no evidence that motion above the celestial sphere or prior to it is impossible. Their argument concerning the splitting of the celestial sphere is utterly unsound, as has been explained at length elsewhere. Likewise, his claim that every motion must have an unmoved mover is utterly unsound, as has been explained at length in its proper place.
The purpose here is to point out that the substance of what these leading theologians and philosophers—said to be the foremost authorities in rational inquiry—have to offer supports only the position of the early generations and the adherents of the Sunnah who follow the Quran and Sunnah. Whatever sound arguments they possess support only this position. But truth became confused with falsehood in their minds, just as the People of the Book mingled truth with falsehood. Whatever truth the latter possess agrees with what was brought by the unlettered Messenger, whom they find described in their Torah and Gospel; it does not contradict it.
The scriptural proofs brought by the prophets do not contradict one another. Nor do sound rational proofs contradict one another, and neither do scriptural and rational proofs contradict each other. And Allah knows best.
