And the second was transmitted from him, from Rawh ibn al-Faraj, from Abd Allāh ibn al-Husayn, from his mother Fātimah: the hadith concerning entry into the mosque. Ibn Adī said:
“That is how the chain is given in the hadith: from Abd Allāh ibn al-Husayn, from his mother Fātimah bint al-Husayn, from Fātimah, the daughter of the Messenger of Allah—may Allah bless him and grant him peace.”
Ibn Adī said:
“Shabīb ibn Saīd possessed a collection of al-Zuhrī’s hadiths, transmitted through Yūnus from al-Zuhrī, and these are sound reports. Ibn Wahb, however, transmitted objectionable hadiths from him. The two hadiths of Rawh ibn al-Faraj that I dictated are transmitted by Ibn Wahb from Shabīb. When his son Ahmad ibn Shabīb transmitted al-Zuhrī’s collection from him, Shabīb ibn Saīd was not the same Shabīb ibn Saīd from whom Ibn Wahb transmitted those objectionable reports. Perhaps, while Shabīb was in Egypt on business, Ibn Wahb recorded reports from him as he related them from memory, and he made mistakes and misremembered. I hope that Shabīb did not deliberately utter this falsehood.”
I say:
These two hadiths, which Ibn Adī found objectionable in his transmissions, were narrated by him from Rawh ibn al-Qāsim. Likewise, he narrated this hadith—the hadith of the blind man—from Rawh ibn al-Qāsim. This hadith was also transmitted from him by Ibn Wahb, just as it was transmitted from him by his two sons. Ibn Wahb, however, did not preserve its wording as accurately as his two sons did. This bears out what Ibn Adī said, establishing that the report was indeed preserved from Shabīb.
Ibn Adī attributed the error to Shabīb, not to Ibn Wahb. This is correct if Shabīb did make an error. If he made errors in transmitting those two hadiths from Rawh ibn al-Qāsim, it is possible that he also made an error in transmitting this hadith from him. Rawh ibn al-Qāsim is a well-known, trustworthy narrator whose reports were included by all six compilers of the principal hadith collections. For this reason, they did not attribute the error to him.
