Moreover, al-Tirmidhī and the others who narrated it with him did not give its wording in full, as the other scholars did. Rather, they narrated it only as far as:
“O Allah, accept his intercession on my behalf.”
Al-Tirmidhī said: Mahmūd ibn Ghaylān narrated to us; ‘Uthmān ibn ‘Umar narrated to us; Shu‘bah narrated to us, from Abū Ja‘far, from ‘Umārah ibn Khuzaymah ibn Thābit, from ‘Uthmān ibn Hunayf:
“A blind man came to the Prophet—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—and said, ‘Ask Allah to heal me.’ He replied, ‘If you wish, you may remain patient; that is better for you.’ The man said, ‘Then supplicate to Him.’ He instructed him to perform ablution thoroughly and offer this supplication: ‘O Allah, I ask You and turn to You through Your Prophet Muhammad, the Prophet of mercy. O Muhammad, I have turned through you to my Lord concerning this need of mine, that it may be fulfilled. O Allah, accept his intercession on my behalf.’”
Al-Bayhaqī said:
“We narrated it in the Book of Supplications with a sound chain of transmission from Rawh ibn ‘Ubādah, from Shu‘bah, who said: ‘The man did so and was cured.’” He said: “Hammād ibn Salamah likewise narrated it from Abū Ja‘far al-Khatmī.”
I say: Imam Ahmad also narrated it in his Musnad from Rawh ibn ‘Ubādah, as al-Bayhaqī mentioned. Ahmad said: Rawh ibn ‘Ubādah narrated to us; Shu‘bah narrated to us, from Abū Ja‘far al-Madīnī, who said: I heard ‘Umārah ibn Khuzaymah ibn Thābit narrating from ‘Uthmān ibn Hunayf:
“A blind man came to the Prophet—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—and said, ‘O Prophet of Allah, ask Allah to heal me.’ He replied, ‘If you wish, I will defer that, which is better for your Hereafter; and if you wish, I will supplicate for you.’ The man said, ‘No; rather, ask Allah for me.’ He instructed him to perform ablution, pray two units of prayer, and offer this supplication: ‘O Allah, I ask You and turn to You through Your Prophet Muhammad, the Prophet of mercy. O Muhammad, I turn through you to Allah concerning this need of mine, that it may be fulfilled for me, and that You accept my intercession concerning him and his intercession on my behalf.’ He said: ‘The man did so and was cured.’”
