Majmu' al-FatawaIbn Taimiya

This matter has been discussed at length elsewhere, where it has been explained that this verse indicates that the reciter is commanded to recite “In the name of Allah,” and that this formula is not like the rest of the Quran; rather, it is ancillary to other passages. Here one says, “In the name of Allah, the Most Merciful, the Most Compassionate,” as Solomon wrote, as established by the mass-transmitted Sunnah, and as unanimously agreed upon by the Muslims. Thus one pronounces the very word “name,” which is itself a name for something named; one does not say, “By Allah, the Most Merciful, the Most Compassionate.”

In the case of His words,

“Remember the name of your Lord,”

one says, “Glory be to Allah,” “Praise be to Allah,” “There is no deity worthy of worship except Allah,” and similar expressions. Here, however, He says:

“Recite in the name of your Lord.”

He did not say, “Recite the name of your Lord.” His words, “Remember the name of your Lord,” require remembering Him with the tongue, whereas His words, “Remember your Lord,” may also encompass remembrance in the heart.

His words, “Recite in the name of your Lord,” are like a person saying, “In the name of Allah,” when eating or slaughtering, as the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said:

“Whoever has not yet slaughtered should slaughter in the name of Allah.”

As for glorification, He says:

“And glorify Him morning and evening.”

He also says:

“Glorify the name of your Lord, the Most High.”

And:

“So glorify the name of your Lord, the Most Great.”

Regarding invocation, He says:

“Say: Call upon Allah or call upon the Most Merciful. Whichever you call upon, to Him belong the most beautiful names.”

His words, “Whichever you call upon,” imply a plurality of objects of invocation because of the word “whichever.” His words, “To Him belong the most beautiful names,” imply that the One invoked is one, possessing the most beautiful names. His words, “Call upon Allah or call upon the Most Merciful”—He did not say, “Call in the name of Allah or in the name of the Most Merciful”—convey that it is the one Lord who is invoked by that name.
