of the Companions.” He also cited the hadith of Ibn ʿAbbās: “The Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, recited, ‘Glorify the name of your Lord, the Most High,’ then said, ‘Glory be to my Lord, the Most High.’”
I say: On this subject there is the hadith of ʿUqba ibn ʿĀmir, who reported concerning the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace: “When ‘So glorify the name of your Lord, the Most Great’ was revealed, he said, ‘Use this in your bowing.’ When ‘Glorify the name of your Lord, the Most High’ was revealed, he said, ‘Use this in your prostration.’”
What is meant is that they should say while bowing, “Glory be to my Lord, the Most Great,” and while prostrating, “Glory be to my Lord, the Most High.” This accords with what is established in the Sahīh, where Hudhayfa reported that the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, “stood in prayer reciting al-Baqarah, al-Nisā’ and Āl ʿImrān, then bowed for approximately as long as he had stood, saying, ‘Glory be to my Lord, the Most Great.’ He prostrated for approximately as long as he had bowed, saying, ‘Glory be to my Lord, the Most High.’”
In the Sunan, Ibn Masʿūd reports that the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said: “When a servant says three times while bowing, ‘Glory be to my Lord, the Most Great,’ his bowing is complete, and that is its minimum. When he says three times while prostrating, ‘Glory be to my Lord, the Most High,’ his prostration is complete, and that is its minimum.” The majority of scholars have adopted this.
Al-Baghawī said: “Others have said that it means: declare your Lord, the Most High, free of what those who deviate attribute to Him. They regarded ‘name’ as an expletive.” He continued: “Those who regard the name and the One named as one and the same cite this as evidence, since no one says, ‘Glory be to the name of Allah,’ or ‘Glory be to the name of our Lord.’ Rather, they say, ‘Glory be to Allah,’ and ‘Glory be to our Lord.’ Thus, ‘Glorify the name of your Lord’ means ‘Glorify your Lord.’”
I say: This has already been discussed. The one who says, “Glory be to Allah” and “Glory be to our Lord”
