Khaythamah, from ‘Adī ibn Hātim al-Tā’ī, who reported that the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said: ‘There is not one of you but that his Lord will speak to him, with no interpreter between them’?
As for their claim that speech can only come from an internal cavity, a mouth, lips, and a tongue, we say: Did Allah not say to the heavens and the earth:
‘Come, willingly or unwillingly.’ They said: ‘We come willingly.’
Do you suppose that they spoke with an internal cavity, a mouth, lips, and a tongue? He also said:
‘And We subjected the mountains to glorify Us along with David.’
Do you suppose that they glorified Him with an internal cavity, a mouth, a tongue, and lips? Rather, Allah caused them to speak however He willed. Likewise, Allah spoke however He willed, without our speaking of an internal cavity, a mouth, lips, or a tongue.
When the arguments left him no escape, he said: ‘Allah did speak to Moses, but His speech is other than Him.’ We asked: ‘And whatever is other than Him is created?’ He replied: ‘Yes.’ We said: ‘This is the same as your original claim, except that you are trying to shield yourselves from condemnation.’
There is also the report of al-Zuhrī, who said: ‘When Moses heard his Lord’s speech, he said: “My Lord, was what I heard Your speech?” He said: “Yes, Moses, it was My speech. I spoke to you only with the strength of ten thousand tongues. I possess the strength of all tongues, and I am more powerful still. I spoke to you only to the extent that your body could bear. Had I spoken to you with more than that, you would have died.”’ He continued: ‘When Moses returned to his people, they said to him: “Describe your Lord’s speech to us.” He replied: “Glory be to Allah! How could I describe it to you?” They said: “Then give us a comparison.” He said: “Have you heard the sounds of approaching thunderclaps, with the sweetest sound you have ever heard? It was something like that.”’”
We said to the Jahmiyyah: Who is the one who will say on the Day of Resurrection: ‘O Jesus, son of Mary, did you say
