book there are many false, fabricated hadiths.

Abū Mūsā al-Madīnī also narrated it through Zayd ibn al-Hubāb, from ‘Abd al-Malik ibn Hārūn ibn ‘Antarah, and said, “This is a sound hadith, although its chain is not continuous.” Abū Mūsā said:

“Muhriz ibn Hishām also narrated it from ‘Abd al-Malik, from his father, from his grandfather, from al-Siddīq, may Allah be pleased with him. ‘Abd al-Malik is not particularly strong as a narrator. He lived in Rayy, and his father and grandfather are both trustworthy.”

I say: ‘Abd al-Malik ibn Hārūn ibn ‘Antarah is among those known for lying. Yahyā ibn Ma‘īn said, “He is a liar.” Al-Sa‘dī said, “An impostor and a liar.” Abū Hātim ibn Hibbān said, “He fabricates hadiths.” Al-Nasā’ī said, “His narrations are abandoned.” Al-Bukhārī said, “His hadiths are rejected.” Ahmad ibn Hanbal said, “He is weak.” Ibn ‘Adī said, “He narrates hadiths in which no other narrator corroborates him.” Al-Dāraqutnī said, “Both he and his father are weak.” Al-Hākim said in al-Madkhal (The Introduction): “‘Abd al-Malik ibn Hārūn ibn ‘Antarah al-Shaybānī narrated fabricated hadiths from his father.”

Abū al-Faraj ibn al-Jawzī included this hadith in al-Mawdū‘āt (Fabricated Hadiths). When the hadith scholar Abū Mūsā says, “It is disconnected,” he means that even if its narrators were trustworthy, its chain would still be disconnected.

‘Abd al-Malik also narrated those other related hadiths concerning the People of the Book seeking victory through him, as will be discussed later. In doing so, he contradicted the general body of reports transmitted by Quran commentators and scholars of prophetic biography, as well as what the Quran indicates. This supports the scholars’ assessment that his narrations are abandoned, whether because he deliberately lied or because of his poor memory. It is thus clear that neither this report nor those reports provide any basis for proof.
