They say:
“We can conceive of a property subsisting only in a body. Thus, affirming a property that subsists in something other than a body is inconceivable.”
If someone who affirms these attributes says:
“Rather, these properties can subsist in something other than a body, just as both we and you can affirm a knowing, powerful being who is not a body,”
then those who affirm pleasure, anger, the Face, the Hand, rising over, coming, and other such attributes say:
“Affirm these attributes as well, and say that they subsist in something other than a body.”
If they say:
“We can conceive of pleasure and anger only as subsisting in a heart, which is a body; and we can conceive of a face and a hand only as parts of a body,”
they are told:
“Nor can we conceive of knowledge or power except as subsisting in a body; nor can we conceive of hearing, sight, or speech except as subsisting in a body. Why, then, have you distinguished between like things? You say, ‘These can subsist in something other than a body, whereas those can subsist only in a body,’ although both are alike from the standpoint of reason.”
If they say:
“Anger is the boiling of the heart’s blood in pursuit of vengeance, and the face is that which has a nose, two lips, a tongue, and a cheek,” or something similar,
they are told:
“If you mean the servant’s anger and face, the corresponding argument against you would be: sight is conceivable only through an eyeball, hearing only through an ear canal, speech only through two lips and a tongue, and will only for securing a benefit or warding off harm. Yet you affirm hearing, sight, speech, and will for the Lord in a manner unlike the servant’s attributes. If what you affirm resembles the servant’s attributes, you are committed to likening Him to creation in all these attributes. But if you affirm them in a manner befitting the majesty of Allah Most High, without any resemblance to the attributes of created beings, then affirm them all in this specified manner. There is no distinction between one attribute and another, for what you have denied
