Majmu' al-FatawaIbn Taimiya

‘Alī ibn al-Husayn al-Manjānī narrated to us; Sa‘īd ibn Abī Maryam narrated to us; Mufaddal ibn Abī Fadālah narrated to us; Ibn Damrah narrated to me, concerning the words:

“When he came to it, he was called: ‘Blessed is whoever is in the fire and whoever is around it.’”

He said: “Moses was on the bank of the valley”—until he said—“When he stood up, he saw the fire and walked towards it. When he reached it, ‘he was called: Blessed is whoever is in the fire.’” He said: “It was not a fire; rather, it was the light of Allah. He was the One in that light, and that light was from Him alone, while Moses was around it.”

Abū Sa‘īd ibn Yahyā ibn Sa‘īd al-Qattān narrated to us; Makkī ibn Ibrāhīm narrated to us; Mūsā ibn ‘Ubaydah narrated to us, from Muhammad ibn Ka‘b, concerning His words, Mighty and Majestic:

“Blessed is whoever is in the fire and whoever is around it.”

He said: “The fire was the light of mercy.” He said: “A radiance from Allah Most High.” As for “whoever is around it,” he said: “Moses and the angels.”

It was also narrated through his chain of transmission from Ibn ‘Abbās, concerning “whoever is around it,” that he said: “The angels.” He said: “The same was narrated from ‘Ikrimah, al-Hasan, Sa‘īd ibn Jubayr and Qatādah.” It was narrated from al-Suddī alone, concerning “Blessed is whoever is in the fire,” that he said: “There were angels in the fire.”

In Sahīh Muslim, it is narrated from Abū ‘Ubaydah, from Abū Mūsā, who said: “The Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, stood among us and made four statements, saying: ‘Allah does not sleep, nor is it fitting for Him to sleep. He lowers the balance and raises it. The deeds of the night are raised to Him before the deeds of the day, and the deeds of the day before
