Majmu' al-FatawaIbn Taimiya

“Has the story of Moses reached you? When his Lord called to him in the sacred valley of Tuwā: ‘Go to Pharaoh, for he has transgressed. And say, “Would you be willing to purify yourself, and let me guide you to your Lord so that you may fear Him?”’ Then he showed him the greatest sign.”

Ibn Abī Hātim said in his Tafsīr (Quran commentary): ‘Alī ibn al-Husayn narrated to us; ‘Uthmān ibn Abī Shaybah narrated to us; Mu‘āwiyah ibn Hishām narrated to us; Sharīk narrated to us, from ‘Atā’, from Sa‘īd ibn Jubayr, from Ibn ‘Abbās—may Allah be pleased with him—who said concerning the Exalted’s words,

“When he came to it, he was called: ‘Blessed is whoever is in the fire and whoever is around it.’”

He said: “That was the fire.” He said: “Allah is the One in the light. And the call was made: ‘Blessed is whoever is in the light.’”

‘Alī ibn al-Husayn narrated to us; Muhammad ibn Hamzah narrated to us; ‘Alī ibn al-Husayn ibn Wāqid narrated to us, from his father, from Yazīd al-Nahwī, who said: ‘Ikrimah narrated to me from Ibn ‘Abbās, concerning the words, “Blessed is whoever is in the fire,” that he said: “That fire was His light.” And “whoever is around it” means: “Blessed is whoever is in the light and whoever is around the light.”

He likewise transmitted, through his chain of narration, from ‘Atiyyah’s Quran commentary, from Ibn ‘Abbās, concerning the words,

“When he came to it, he was called: ‘Blessed is whoever is in the fire.’”

He meant Himself. He said: “The light of the Lord of the worlds was in the tree and around it.”

My father narrated to us; Ibrāhīm ibn Sa‘īd al-Jawharī narrated to us; Abū Mu‘āwiyah narrated to us, from Shaybān, from ‘Ikrimah, concerning the words, “Blessed is whoever is in the fire.” He said: “Allah was in His light.”

Abū Zur‘ah narrated to us; Ibn Abī Shaybah narrated to us; ‘Alī ibn Ja‘far al-Madā’inī narrated to us, from Warqā’, from ‘Atā’ ibn al-Sā’ib, from Sa‘īd ibn Jubayr, concerning the words, “Blessed is whoever is in the fire.” He said: “He called to him while He was in the light.”
