Majmu' al-FatawaIbn Taimiya

Paradise, and he looks at his seat and dwelling there until the Hour comes.

When the disbeliever is leaving this world behind and approaching the Hereafter, and the Angel of Death comes to him, angels descend to him from heaven, bringing a shroud of fire and burial perfume of fire.

He said:

They sit around him as far as his eyes can see. The Angel of Death comes and sits by his head, then says, “Come out, wicked soul! Come out to Allah’s anger and wrath.” His soul scatters throughout his body, unwilling to come out because of what it sees and witnesses. He draws it out as a skewer is drawn out of wet wool. When his soul departs, everything between heaven and earth curses him, except the two races of jinn and humankind. He is then taken up to the lowest heaven, but it is shut against him.

The Lord, Blessed and Exalted, says, “Return My servant to his resting place, for I promised them that from the earth I created them, to it I shall return them, and from it I shall bring them forth once again.”

His soul is returned to his resting place. Munkar and Nakīr come to him, churning up the earth with their fangs and scraping it with their hair. Their voices are like crashing thunder and their eyes like flashing lightning. They make him sit up, then ask him, “Who is your Lord?”

He replies, “I do not know.” A voice calls from beside the grave, “May you never know!”

They strike him with an iron hammer which all those between the eastern and western horizons could not lift even if they joined together. His grave is constricted around him until his ribs interlock. A man with an ugly face, ugly clothes, and a foul smell comes to him and says, “May Allah reward you with evil! By Allah, as I have known you, you were indeed slow to obey Allah and quick to disobey Him.”

He asks, “Who are you?”

He replies, “I am your wicked deeds.” Then a door is opened for him to the Fire, and he looks at his seat there until the Hour comes.’

Imam Ahmad ibn Hanbal, Mahmūd ibn Ghaylān, and others narrated it from Abū al-Nadr.
