Majmu' al-FatawaIbn Taimiya

Allah, exalted is He, has described Himself, whether grammarians call them transitive verbs—which constitute most of those mentioned in the Quran—or intransitive verbs, because they do not take a direct object but connect to an object only through a preposition. Examples include His rising toward heaven, His rising over the Throne, His descending to the lowest heaven, and similar actions. Allah has indeed described Himself with these actions.

He has also described Himself as speaking, using both intransitive and transitive verbs, as in His words:

“And when your Lord said to the angels.”

And His words:

“And Allah spoke to Moses directly.”

And His words, exalted is He:

“And their Lord called out to them.”

And His words:

“And on the Day He will call to them and say, ‘How did you respond to the messengers?’”

And His words:

“Allah speaks the truth, and He guides to the way.”

And His words:

“Allah—there is no deity worthy of worship except Him. He will surely gather you on the Day of Resurrection, about which there is no doubt. And who is more truthful than Allah in speech?”

And His words:

“Allah has sent down the best of speech.”

And His words:

“And your Lord’s gracious word to the Children of Israel was fulfilled because of their patience.”

And His words:

“And the word of your Lord has been fulfilled in truth and justice.”

And His words:

“And Allah certainly fulfilled His promise to you.”

Likewise, He has described Himself as possessing knowledge, strength, mercy, and other such attributes, as in His words:

“And they encompass nothing of His knowledge except what He wills.”

And His words:

“Indeed, Allah is the Provider, the Possessor of Strength, the Firm.”

And His words:

“Our Lord, You encompass all things in mercy and knowledge.”

And His words:

“And My mercy encompasses all things.”

The same applies to the other descriptions He has given of Himself in His Book and those authentically reported from His Messenger, may Allah bless him and grant him peace. For the same principle applies to all of this.
