Shaykh al-Islām—may Allah have mercy on him—was asked about these verses:
O masters of learning, give us an answer that quenches our thirst,
For the water of my patience has grown stagnant.
Concerning the words of one who sets the foundation of a creed in verse,
Declaring what is truly due to the True One, without compromise:
O you who deny that God is separate from creation,
You who are misled—rather, you who mislead!
Suppose you have lost your way: where, then, are you?
If you are separate from Him, He too is separate from you.
Or if you say, “I am not separate,” we reply:
“Then you contend for union or indwelling.”
Or if you say, “It follows that something is within,”
We reply, “Yes; the Lord does not dwell within us.”
If you say, “It follows that He occupies a spatial enclosure,
Or has come to be in a direction,” your reasoning is feeble.
You have indeed spoken falsely: an enclosure is nothing
But a place, and He is separate from it.
Likewise, directions have no existent reality
In relation to Him; and the truth of this is clear.
