As for the “Throne,” it is dome-shaped, as indicated by the report in the Sunan of Abū Dāwūd from Jubayr ibn Mut‘im, who said:
“A Bedouin came to the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him, and said, ‘O Messenger of Allah, people are exhausted and their dependants are hungry.’ He related the hadith up to the point where the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said, ‘Allah is upon His Throne, and His Throne is above His heavens and His earth like this.’” He gestured with his finger to indicate the shape of a dome.
It has not been established that it is a celestial sphere that is round in every respect. Rather, it has been established that it is above the celestial spheres and that it has legs, as reported in the two Sahīh collections from Abū Sa‘īd, who said:
“A Jewish man whose face had been slapped came to the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, and said, ‘O Muhammad, one of your Companions slapped my face.’ The Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said, ‘Summon him,’ and they summoned him.
“He asked, ‘Why did you slap his face?’
“The man replied, ‘O Messenger of Allah, I was passing through the marketplace when he was saying, “By Him who chose Moses above all mankind!” I said, “You wicked man! Even above Muhammad?” Then anger seized me, and I slapped him.’
“The Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said, ‘Do not give preference to one prophet over another. People will fall unconscious on the Day of Resurrection, and I will be the first to regain consciousness. Then I will find Moses holding one of the legs of the Throne. I do not know whether he regained consciousness before me or was recompensed for his swoon at Mount Sinai.’”
Concerning its “elevation,” the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said:
“When you ask Allah, ask Him for Firdaws, for it is the middle and highest part of Paradise. Above it is the Throne of the Most Merciful, and from it the rivers of Paradise spring forth.”
These hadiths thus make clear that the Throne is the highest of all created things and the roof over them, that it is dome-shaped, and that it has
