The evidence for this in the Sunnah includes the account of the Messenger’s ascension to his Lord, the angels’ descent from Allah and their ascent to Him, and his statement concerning the angels who alternate by night and day:
“Then those who spent the night among you ascend to their Lord, and He questions them, though He knows them best.”
In the hadith concerning the Khawārij:
“Will you not trust me, when I am the trusted one of Him who is in heaven?”
In the hadith concerning healing through supplication:
“Our Lord, Allah, who is in heaven, hallowed be Your name.”
In the hadith concerning the mountain goats:
“The Throne is above that, and Allah is above His Throne, and He knows your condition.”
In the hadith concerning the taking of the soul:
“Until it is taken up to the heaven in which Allah is.”
In Sunan Abī Dāwūd, Jubayr ibn Mut‘im reported:
“A Bedouin came to the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, and said, ‘O Messenger of Allah, people are suffering, families are hungry, and wealth has been ruined. Pray to Allah for us, for we seek your intercession with Allah, and Allah’s intercession with you.’ The Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, glorified Allah until this was reflected in his Companions’ faces. He said, ‘Woe to you! Do you know who Allah is? Allah is not to be asked to intercede with any of His creatures. Allah’s majesty is far greater than that. Allah is over His Throne, and His Throne is above His heavens and His earth, like this.’ He gestured with his fingers in the shape of a dome.”
In the Sahīh, Jābir ibn ‘Abd Allāh reported:
“When the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, delivered a great sermon on the Day of ‘Arafāt, before the largest gathering the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, ever attended, he repeatedly asked, ‘Have I conveyed the message?’ They would reply, ‘Yes,’ and he would raise his finger towards heaven
