Majmu' al-FatawaIbn Taimiya

His rising over the Throne to mean power. If it were as they claim, there would be no distinction between the Throne and the seventh earth, for Allah has power over everything. As for the earth, Allah has power over it, over latrines, and over everything in the world. If Allah’s rising over the Throne meant exercising dominion—and He, mighty and majestic, exercises dominion over all things—then He would have risen over the Throne, the earth, the heavens, latrines, and filth, since He has power and dominion over all these things.

Since He has power over everything, yet no Muslim considers it permissible to say that Allah has risen over latrines and privies, rising over the Throne cannot mean exercising the dominion that encompasses all things. Rather, its meaning must pertain specifically to the Throne, to the exclusion of everything else.

He also cited evidence from the Quran, hadith, scholarly consensus, and reason.

Then he said:

(Chapter on the Face, the Two Eyes, Sight, and the Two Hands, and the Verses Concerning Them.

He extensively refuted those who interpret these attributes figuratively, in a discussion too long to reproduce here. Among his statements is the following:

“If we are asked, ‘Do you say that Allah has two Hands?’

We reply: We do affirm this, as indicated by His words, exalted is He:

‘The Hand of Allah is above their hands.’

And His words, exalted is He:

‘What I created with My two Hands.’

It is narrated that the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said:

‘Allah stroked Adam’s back with His Hand and brought forth his descendants from him. He created the Garden of Eden with His Hand and wrote the Torah with His Hand.’

The aforementioned report from the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, also states:

‘Allah created Adam with His Hand, created the Garden of Eden with His Hand, wrote the Torah with His Hand, and planted the Tūbā tree with His Hand.’
