and in matters over which we differ, we rely upon the Book of our Lord, the Sunnah of our Prophet, the consensus of the Muslims, and whatever is of like import. We introduce nothing into Allah’s religion for which He has given us no permission, and we do not say about Allah what we do not know.

We say that Allah will come on the Day of Resurrection, as He said:

“And your Lord comes, with the angels, rank upon rank.”

And that Allah draws near to His servants however He wills, as He said:

“And We are closer to him than his jugular vein.”

And as He said:

“Then He drew near and descended, and was at a distance of two bow-lengths or nearer.”

He went on to say:

“We shall present evidence, chapter by chapter, for the beliefs we have mentioned and for those remaining beliefs we have not yet mentioned.”

He then discussed the fact that Allah will be seen and presented evidence for it. He then discussed the fact that the Quran is uncreated and presented evidence for it. He then discussed those who withhold judgment concerning the Quran, saying, “I do not say that it is created or that it is uncreated,” and refuted them.

Then he said:

(Chapter on Rising over the Throne

He said: If someone asks, “What do you say concerning rising over the Throne?” he is told:

We say that Allah has risen over His Throne, as He said:

“The Most Merciful rose over the Throne.”

And He, exalted is He, said:

“To Him ascends good speech, and righteous deeds raise it.”

And He, exalted is He, said:

“Rather, Allah raised him to Himself.”

And He, exalted is He, said:

“He directs affairs from heaven to earth; then they ascend to Him.”

And He, exalted is He, said, quoting Pharaoh:

“O Hāmān, build me a tower so that I may reach the ways.”
