Majmu' al-FatawaIbn Taimiya

He then cited the hadith:

“People are cast into the Fire, and it says, ‘Are there any more?’ until He places His Leg in it.”

This is al-Bukhārī’s narration. Another narration reads: “He places His Foot upon it.”

He then cited what Muslim al-Batīn narrated from Ibn ‘Abbās: that the Kursī (Seat) is the resting place of the two Feet, and that none but Allah can fathom the magnitude of the Throne. He also cited the statements of Muslim al-Batīn himself, al-Suddī, Wahb ibn Munabbih, and Abū Mālik. Some of them say, “The resting place of His two Feet,” while others say, “He places His two Legs upon it.”

He then said:

“These narrations have been transmitted from these figures of the earliest generations of this community, in agreement with the words of the Prophet—may Allah bless him and grant him peace. They have circulated in speech and been preserved in memory. No succeeding generation denied what it received from its predecessors, nor did any of their contemporaries object to them. Scholars and ordinary people alike transmitted these narrations, which were recorded in their books, until people arose in the later generations of this community—may Allah diminish their numbers—from among those whom the Messenger of Allah—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—warned us against sitting with and speaking to. We were commanded not to visit their sick or accompany their funeral processions. These people targeted these narrations, branding them as likening Allah to His creation. They turned to the transmitted reports and sought to subject them to the judgments of analogical reasoning, charging the earlier generations with unbelief. They objected to the Companions and their Successors and rejected the rightly guided imams. Thus they went astray and led others away from the straight path.”

He then cited the report transmitted from Ibn ‘Abbās and his reply to Najda al-Harūrī, followed by the hadith concerning the “Image.” He mentioned that he had written a separate book on it and discussed people’s differing interpretations of it.
