Majmu' al-FatawaIbn Taimiya

He was asked about someone who said that Alī fought the jinn in the well, and that he charged twelve thousand men and defeated them.

He replied:

No Companion ever charged twelve thousand or ten thousand men single-handedly—neither Alī nor anyone else. Rather, the largest force assembled against the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, was the Confederates who besieged him at the Trench. They numbered approximately that many, and Alī killed a man from among them named “Amr ibn Abd Wudd al-Āmirī”.

No human has fought the jinn—neither Alī nor anyone else. Indeed, Alī was of too high a standing for that. The jinn who follow the Companions fight the disbelieving jinn; they do not need the Companions to fight alongside them.
