Majmu' al-FatawaIbn Taimiya

Neither Alī nor any other Companion fought the jinn, nor did any human fight the jinn, whether in the well of Dhāt al-Alam or elsewhere.

The hadith reporting that he fought the jinn is a fabrication and a lie, by the unanimous agreement of the knowledgeable scholars. During the lifetime of the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, Alī never fought an army of fifty thousand or thirty thousand, let alone charged such an army single-handedly. The campaigns he attended with the Messenger of Allah and in which he fought numbered nine: Badr, Uhud, the Trench, Khaybar, the conquest of Mecca, the battle of Hunayn, and others.

The polytheists were most numerous at the Battle of the Confederates, also known as the Battle of the Trench. They were besieging Medina, but neither they nor the Muslims fought with their entire forces. Only a few Muslims and a few disbelievers fought one another. It was during this battle that Alī killed Amr ibn Abd Wudd al-Āmirī. Whenever Alī fought in single combat, he faced only one opponent, never two.

As for Marhab at Khaybar, it is established in the Sahih that the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said:

“I shall give the banner to a man who loves Allah and His Messenger, and whom Allah and His Messenger love. Allah will grant victory at his hands.”

He gave it to Alī. The fighting at Khaybar lasted several days, and some of its fortresses were conquered at the hands of Alī, may Allah be pleased with him. A report relates that he killed Marhab, while another relates that Muhammad ibn Maslama killed him. Perhaps there were two men named Marhab. He killed him in the usual manner: he did not cleave his entire body in two, nor did he cleave the horse, nor did there descend
