Majmu' al-FatawaIbn Taimiya

And the “Quran” has praised the “Companions” in numerous passages, as in the words of the Most High:

“And the foremost, the first of the Emigrants and the Helpers, and those who followed them in goodness—Allah is pleased with them, and they are pleased with Him.”

And His words:

“Those of you who spent and fought before the conquest are not equal to those who did so afterwards. They are greater in rank than those who spent and fought afterwards. Yet Allah has promised all of them the best reward.”

The Most High also says:

“Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah, and those with him are firm against the disbelievers and merciful among themselves. You see them bowing and prostrating, seeking bounty from Allah and His pleasure. Their mark is on their faces from the effects of prostration. That is their description in the Torah. Their description in the Gospel is like a crop that sends forth its shoots, strengthens them, grows thick, and stands firmly upon its stalks, delighting the sowers—so that through them He may enrage the disbelievers.”

And the Most High says:

“Allah was certainly pleased with the believers when they pledged allegiance to you beneath the tree. He knew what was in their hearts, so He sent down tranquillity upon them and rewarded them with a conquest soon to come.”

It is established in Sahīh Muslim that the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said:

“No one who pledged allegiance beneath the tree will enter the Fire.”

In the two Sahīh collections, Abū Sa‘īd reports that the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said:

“Do not revile my Companions. By Him in whose hand is my soul, if any of you were to spend gold equal to Mount Uhud, it would not match a single mudd spent by any one of them, nor even half of it.”

It is also established in the authentic hadith collections, through several chains of transmission, that he said:

“The best of generations is the generation among whom I was sent, then those who follow them, then those who follow them.”

These hadiths concerning the Companions’ merits, praising them and affirming the superiority of their generation over subsequent generations, are widely transmitted—indeed, transmitted in a manner that establishes certainty. Thus, disparaging them amounts to disparaging the Quran and the Sunnah. For this reason, scholars have discussed declaring the Rāfidah unbelievers, as we have explained at length elsewhere. And Allah, glorified and exalted is He, knows best.
