Abū Bakr grew apprehensive and said twice, ‘I was more in the wrong, O Messenger of Allah.’ The Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said, ‘Allah sent me to you, and you said, “You are lying,” while Abū Bakr said, “You are telling the truth.” He supported me with his person and his wealth. Will you not leave my companion alone for my sake? Will you not leave my companion alone for my sake?’” He was never mistreated after that. Al-Bukhārī said: “Ghāmara means ‘he took the lead in doing good.’”

In the two Sahīh collections, Ibn ‘Abbās said:

“‘Umar was placed on his bier, and people gathered around him, supplicating, praising him, and praying over him before he was carried away. I was among them. I was startled by a man who grasped my shoulder from behind. I turned around and found that it was ‘Alī. He invoked Allah’s mercy upon ‘Umar and said:

‘You have left behind no one whose deeds I would rather have when meeting Allah, Mighty and Majestic, than yours. By Allah, I certainly used to think that Allah would place you with your two companions. That was because I so often heard the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, say, “Abū Bakr, ‘Umar, and I came,” “Abū Bakr, ‘Umar, and I entered,” and “Abū Bakr, ‘Umar, and I went out.” So I used to hope—or think—that Allah would place you with them.’”

In the two Sahīh collections and elsewhere, it is reported that:

“On the day of Uhud, after the Muslims had suffered casualties, Abū Sufyān said, ‘Is Muhammad among the people? Is Muhammad among the people? Is Muhammad among the people?’ The Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said, ‘Do not answer him.’ Then he said, ‘Is Ibn Abī Quhāfah among the people? Is Ibn Abī Quhāfah among the people? Is Ibn Abī Quhāfah among the people?’ The Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said, ‘Do not answer him.’ Then he said, ‘Is Ibn al-Khattāb among the people? Is Ibn al-Khattāb among the people? Is Ibn al-Khattāb among the people?’ The Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said, ‘Do not answer him.’
