As for “the wives of the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace,” no one except Abū Muhammad ibn Hazm claimed that they were superior to the ten. This is an anomalous view in which no one preceded him. Those leading scholars to whom it was reported rejected it, and the texts of the Quran and Sunnah refute it. The argument he advanced is unsound.
He argued that a woman shares her husband’s rank in Paradise, and that the rank of the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, is the highest of all ranks; therefore, his wives would share his rank. Yet his argument would necessarily imply that his wives are superior to all the prophets; that the wife of every man among the people of Paradise is superior to anyone equal to her husband; and that the youths who attend upon the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, and the wide-eyed maidens married to him are superior to the prophets and messengers. All believers know these conclusions to be false.
It is established in an authentic hadith that the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said:
“‘Ā’ishah’s superiority over other women is like the superiority of tharīd (bread soaked in broth) over other foods.”
