Ibn Abd al-Barr said:

“The phrase ‘and every slave she owned was free’ appears in the versions of this report narrated by Sulaymān al-Taymī and Ash‘ath al-Humrānī from Bakr al-Muzanī. Ash‘ath’s version mentions Ibn Abbās, Abū Hurayra, Ibn Umar, Hafsa, Ā’isha, and Umm Salama; but the reference is actually to Zaynab bint Umm Salama.”

Al-Athram said: Abd Allāh ibn Rajā’ narrated to us: Imrān informed us, from Qatāda, from Zurāra ibn Abī Awfā, that a woman asked Ibn Abbās about a woman who had bound herself to give her cloak as an offering if she wore it.

Ibn Abbās asked, “Was she angry or content when she said it?”

They replied, “Angry.”

He said, “Allah, Blessed and Exalted, is not approached through anger. Let her offer expiation for her oath.”

I say: Ibn Abbās inquired about the vow to determine whether she intended to draw near to Allah through what she had vowed—as someone might say, ‘If my wealth remains safe, I will give it in charity’—or whether she intended to swear that she would not wear it, in which case she would owe expiation for an oath. He therefore asked, “Was she angry or content when she said it?” When they replied, “Angry,” he knew that she was swearing an oath, not making a vow. This is why the jurists call this “a vow of obstinacy and anger.” It is an oath, even though it takes the form of a conditional statement.

Al-Athram said: Ibn al-Tabbā‘ narrated to me: Abū Bakr ibn Ayyāsh narrated to us, from al-Alā’ ibn al-Musayyib, from Ya‘lā ibn al-Nu‘mān, from Ikrima, from Ibn Abbās, who was asked about a man who had dedicated his wealth to the poor. He said, “Keep your wealth and spend it on
