your ransom!” She had declared that every slave she owned was free, all her wealth was an offering, and she was a Jew and a Christian.
Hafsa said, “A Jew and a Christian! Leave the man and his wife alone.”
He continued: I then went to Abd Allāh ibn Umar, who accompanied me to her. He stood at the door and greeted her. She said, “Baynan anta wa-baynan abūka.”
He said, “Are you made of stone? Are you made of iron? What are you? Zaynab gave you a ruling, and the Mother of the Believers gave you a ruling, yet you did not accept their rulings!”
She said, “O Abū Abd al-Rahmān, may Allah make me your ransom!” She had declared that every slave she owned was free, all her wealth was an offering, and she was a Jew and a Christian.
He said, “A Jew and a Christian! Offer expiation for your oath, and leave the man and his wife alone.”
Abd al-Razzāq also related this in his Musannaf, from al-Taymī, from Mu‘tamir ibn Sulaymān, from his father, from Bakr ibn Abd Allāh al-Muzanī, who said: Abū Rāfi‘ informed me, saying:
My mistress, Laylā bint al-Ajmā’, said to me that every slave she owned was free, all her wealth was an offering, and she was a Jew and a Christian, “if you do not divorce your wife.”
He continued: Zaynab bint Umm Salama came to us. Whenever a woman learned in religion was mentioned, Zaynab was mentioned. I told her about this, and she said, “Leave the man and his wife alone, and offer expiation for your oath.”
He continued: Hafsa, the wife of the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, came to us. I said, “O Mother of the Believers, may Allah make me your ransom!” My mistress told her about her oath, and Hafsa said, “Offer expiation for your oath.”
He continued: We went to Abd Allāh ibn Umar and said, “O Abū Abd al-Rahmān!” She told him about her oath, and he said, “Offer expiation for your oath, and leave the man and his wife alone.”
