He—may Allah Most High have mercy on him—was also asked:
If someone swears an oath pledging to walk to Mecca, must he walk, or perform Hajj riding and offer compensation, or offer expiation for an oath?
He replied:
Praise be to Allah.
Rather, expiation for an oath suffices, according to the vast majority of Muslim scholars among the Companions and those who followed them in righteousness. These include ʿUmar ibn al-Khattāb, his son ʿAbd Allāh ibn ʿUmar, Hafsah bint ʿUmar, Zaynab, the stepdaughter of the Messenger of Allah—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—and others. May Allah be pleased with them.
This is the position of al-Shāfiʿī and Ahmad, and the later view transmitted from Abū Hanīfah. Ibn al-Qāsim also gave this ruling to his son when he broke such an oath. The Quran and Sunnah support this view, as has been explained at length elsewhere. And Allah knows best.
