There are many scriptural texts to this effect, as well as statements by the early generations and the imams.
In the two Sahīh collections, Abū Hurayrah, may Allah be pleased with him, reports that the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said:
“Adam and Moses debated. Moses said, ‘Adam, you are the father of mankind. Allah created you with His Hand, breathed into you of His spirit, and made His angels prostrate before you. Why, then, did you cause us and your descendants to leave Paradise?’
Adam replied, ‘You are Moses, whom Allah chose to bear His message and to whom He spoke. Do you find in the Torah: “Adam disobeyed his Lord and went astray”?’
He said, ‘Yes.’
Adam said, ‘Why, then, do you blame me for something Allah decreed for me before I was created?’”
The Prophet said, “Thus Adam prevailed over Moses in the argument.”
Moses blamed Adam only for the hardship and misery that befell him and his descendants through leaving Paradise. Had it merely been a garden on earth, another earthly garden could have replaced it.
(Adam, peace be upon him, appealed to divine decree because a servant is commanded to bear patiently the calamities Allah has decreed, and to repent to Him and seek His forgiveness for sins and faults. And Allah knows best.
