his wife.’ Then I went to Hafsa, the Mother of the Believers. She sent for my mistress, who came to her and said, ‘Mother of the Believers, may Allah make me your ransom! She has declared that every slave she owns is free, all her wealth is dedicated as an offering, and she is a Jew and a Christian.’
“Hafsa replied, ‘A Jew and a Christian! Do not come between the man and his wife.’
“Then I went to ‘Abd Allāh ibn ‘Umar, who accompanied me to her. He stood at the door, greeted her, and said, ‘Are you made of stone? Or are you made of iron? What are you made of? Zaynab has given you a ruling, and the Mother of the Believers has given you a ruling, yet you have not accepted her ruling!’
“She said, ‘Abū ‘Abd al-Rahmān, may Allah make me your ransom! She has declared that every slave she owns is free, all her wealth is dedicated as an offering, and she is a Jew and a Christian.’
“He replied, ‘A Jew and a Christian! Offer expiation for your oath, and do not come between the man and his wife.’”
Al-Athram said: ‘Abd Allāh ibn Rajā’ narrated to us: ‘Imrān informed us, from Qatāda, from Zurāra ibn Abī Awfā:
A woman asked Ibn ‘Abbās about a woman who had pledged to dedicate her cloak as an offering if she wore it. Ibn ‘Abbās asked, “Did she say this in anger or when she was content?”
They replied, “In anger.”
He said, “Allah, Blessed and Exalted, is not to be approached through anger. Let her offer expiation for her oath.”
He also said: Ibn al-Tabbā‘ narrated to me: Abū Bakr ibn ‘Ayyāsh narrated to us, from al-‘Alā’ ibn al-Musayyib, from Ya‘lā ibn al-Nu‘mān and ‘Ikrima, from Ibn ‘Abbās:
He was asked about a man who had dedicated his wealth to the poor. He replied, “Keep your wealth, spend it on your dependants, pay your debts with it, and offer expiation for your oath.”
