Majmu' al-FatawaIbn Taimiya

It is also recorded in an authentic hadith collection that the jinn asked him for provisions for themselves and their animals. He said:

“Every bone over which Allah’s name has been mentioned is yours, with the fullest covering of flesh, and every dropping is fodder for your animals.”

The Prophet (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) said:

“So do not cleanse yourselves with either of them after relieving yourselves, for they are provisions for your brethren among the jinn.”

Thus, he (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) permitted the believing jinn only that over which Allah’s name had been mentioned. How much more, then, does this apply to human beings? However, if someone finds meat from an animal slaughtered by another person, he may eat it, mentioning Allah’s name over it, because people’s actions are presumed valid and sound. As recorded in an authentic hadith collection:

“Some people said, ‘O Messenger of Allah, people who have only recently embraced Islam bring us meat, and we do not know whether they mentioned Allah’s name over it or not.’ He replied, ‘Mention Allah’s name yourselves and eat.’”

He—may Allah Most High have mercy on him—was asked:

“Concerning a slaughtered animal over which it is known with certainty that Allah’s name was not mentioned: is it permissible to eat it? Does it render utensils ritually impure?”

He replied:

“Praise be to Allah. Mentioning Allah’s name over it is obligatory according to the Quran and Sunnah, and this is the position of the majority of scholars. However, if a person does not know whether the slaughterer mentioned Allah’s name or not, he may eat it. If he knows with certainty that the slaughterer did not mention Allah’s name, he must not eat it. The same applies to the Eid sacrifice.”
