He also said—may Allah Most High have mercy on him:
Slaughter performed by either a woman or a man is valid. A woman may slaughter even while menstruating, for menstruation does not make her hand impure. Slaughter performed by a woman is valid by the consensus of the Muslims. A woman once slaughtered a sheep, and the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, instructed that it be eaten.
Shaykh al-Islām—may Allah have mercy on him—was asked:
If an animal, such as a buffalo or another animal, is slaughtered while in water and dies in the water, may it be eaten?
He answered:
If the wound is not fatal in itself and the animal’s head is submerged in the water, it is not lawful to eat it, because both a prohibiting factor and a permitting factor bear on its ruling. This is as the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said to ʿAdī ibn Hātim:
“If other dogs join your dog, do not eat the game, for you mentioned Allah’s name over your dog alone, not over the others.”
If its body is in the water but its head remains above water, that causes no harm. If, however, the wound is fatal in itself, there is a well-known scholarly disagreement concerning it.
