He—may Allah have mercy on him—was asked: “Is it permissible to drink ‘al-iqsamā’?”
He answered:
Praise be to Allah. If it is made from raisins alone, the scholars agree that it is permissible to drink it for three days, provided it has not become intoxicating. However, if it is made from two ingredients, one of which causes the other to spoil, such as raisins and unripe dates, or if it has been left for more than three days, then there is disagreement concerning it.
If something is added to make it sour, such as vinegar or the like, or lemon juice—as is done with fuqqā‘ al-mushadhdhab (a barley drink)—then it is permissible to drink it without restriction, for its acidity prevents it from becoming intoxicating. Thus, all these drinks are permissible to drink if they turn sour without becoming intoxicating.
He—may Allah Most High have mercy on him—was asked about a man who stopped among some people, having no food for himself or his mount. The people refused either to sell him food or to offer him hospitality, and both he and his mount suffered harm: “May he take from them enough to meet his needs without their consent?”
