Majmu' al-FatawaIbn Taimiya

How, then, could the descendants of “ʿUbayd Allāh ibn Maymūn al-Qaddāh” be infallible, given their notorious hypocrisy, lying, and misguidance? Even supposing this were not so, there is no doubt that their conduct is that of kings—and among the worst in oppression and the violation of sacred prohibitions, the furthest from putting affairs in order and fulfilling obligations, and the most flagrant in promoting innovations contrary to the Book and the Sunnah and aiding the people of hypocrisy and innovation.

The scholars have agreed that the Umayyad and Abbasid dynasties were closer to Allah and His Messenger than their dynasty, possessed greater knowledge and faith, and were less given to innovation and wickedness. They also agree that the caliphs of those two dynasties were more obedient to Allah and His Messenger than the caliphs of their dynasty. Yet none of the caliphs of those two dynasties could legitimately be described as infallible. How, then, can someone claim infallibility when his obscenities, reprehensible deeds, oppression, tyranny, aggression, hostility toward the righteous and pious members of the Muslim community, and trust in the people of disbelief and hypocrisy have become manifest? They are among the most wicked of people and the most deeply entrenched in disbelief. Only someone steeped in ignorance, or a heretic speaking without knowledge, would claim infallibility in the face of such hypocrisy and wickedness.

It is known beyond doubt that anyone who attests to their faith and piety, or to the authenticity of their lineage, has testified to something of which he has no knowledge. Allah Most High has said:

“Do not pursue that of which you have no knowledge.”

And He Most High has said:

“Except those who testify to the truth knowingly.”

And He said concerning Joseph’s brothers:

“We testified only to what we knew.”

No one knows the authenticity of their lineage
