that of one who follows falsehood; the matter and the true state of affairs will become confused for him, just as people were confused about Musaylima of al-Yamāma and other liars who claimed to be prophets, although they were nothing but liars. The Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said:
“The Hour will not come until there are thirty lying impostors among you, each claiming to be the Messenger of Allah.”
The impostor who brings the greatest trial is “the great Dajjāl,” whom Jesus son of Mary will kill. From the time of Adam until the coming of the Hour, Allah has created no trial greater than his. The Prophet instructed Muslims to seek refuge from his trial in their prayers. It is established that “he will say to the sky, ‘Rain!’ and it will rain, and to the earth, ‘Bring forth vegetation!’ and it will bring forth vegetation,” and that “he will kill a believing man, then say to him, ‘Rise!’ and he will rise. He will say, ‘I am your Lord,’ but the man will reply, ‘You lie! Rather, you are the one-eyed liar about whom the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, told us. By Allah, I have only become more certain about you.’ Thus he kills him twice, then seeks to kill him a third time, but Allah does not give him power over him.” He claims divinity.
The Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, made clear three signs concerning him that contradict his claim:
The first is that “he is one-eyed, whereas your Lord is not one-eyed.”
The second is that “between his eyes is written kāfir (disbeliever), which every believer will read, whether literate or illiterate.”
The third is his saying:
“Know that none of you will see his Lord until he dies.”
