Majmu' al-FatawaIbn Taimiya

Whoever in either group believes that he has been wronged and subjected to aggression—if he is patient and pardons, Allah will honor him and grant him victory. As recorded in the Sahīh, the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said:

“Allah only increases a servant in honor for pardoning others. No one humbles himself for Allah except that Allah raises him, and charity does not diminish wealth.”

Allah Most High says:

“The recompense for an evil deed is its equivalent, but whoever pardons and makes reconciliation—his reward is with Allah.”

He also says:

“Blame falls only on those who wrong people and commit aggression in the land without right. Those will have a painful punishment.”

“But whoever is patient and forgives—surely this is a matter requiring firm resolve.”

Allah exacts retribution from the unjust aggressor in this world and the Hereafter, for aggression brings about his downfall. Ibn Mas'ūd said:

“Even if one mountain were to commit aggression against another, Allah would level the aggressor to the ground.”

Among the wise sayings expressed in poetry are these lines:

Allah has decreed that aggression brings its people down,
And that calamities come round upon the aggressor.

This is borne out by His words, Most High:

“Your aggression is only against yourselves—an enjoyment of life,”

to the end of the verse. A hadith states:

“No sin is more deserving of having its perpetrator’s punishment hastened in this world than aggression, and no good deed is more deserving of having its doer’s reward hastened than maintaining ties of kinship.”

Whoever in either group is an unjust aggressor should therefore fear Allah and repent. Whoever has been wronged and subjected to aggression, yet remains patient, will receive glad tidings from Allah. Allah Most High says:

“And give glad tidings to the patient.”

Amr ibn Aws said: “They are those who do not wrong others when they themselves are wronged.”

Allah Most High has said to the believers concerning their enemy:

“But if you are patient and mindful of Allah, their scheming will not harm you
