Majmu' al-FatawaIbn Taimiya

And consuming either a small or a large amount of it incurs the prescribed punishment for drinking intoxicants: eighty lashes or forty, if the person is a Muslim who believes intoxicants to be forbidden, and it deprives one of reason.

The jurists have differed over its ritual impurity, holding three views. The first is that it is not impure. The second is that its liquid form is impure, while its solid form is pure. The third—and correct—view is that it is impure like wine: hashish resembles excrement, whereas wine resembles urine. Both are among the foul things that Allah and His Messenger have forbidden.

Anyone known to consume hashish is like someone known to drink wine, and is worse in certain respects. He is to be shunned and punished for this just as the wine-drinker is, because of the warnings concerning wine, such as the Prophet’s words, may Allah bless him and grant him peace:

“Allah has cursed wine, the one who drinks it, the one who serves it, the one who sells it, the one who buys it, the one who carries it, and the one who consumes its proceeds.”

And his words:

“Whoever drinks wine, Allah will not accept his prayers for forty days. If he repents, Allah will accept his repentance. If he returns to drinking it, Allah will not accept his prayers for forty days. If he repents, Allah will accept his repentance. If he returns to drinking it, Allah will not accept his prayers for forty days. If he repents, Allah will accept his repentance. If he returns to drinking it a third or fourth time, it is incumbent upon Allah to give him tīnat al-khabāl to drink, which is the discharge from the inhabitants of Hell.”

It is also authentically reported from him in the Sahīh, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, that he said:

“Every intoxicant is forbidden.”

He was asked about these drinks, and, having been endowed with concise, comprehensive speech, he said, may Allah bless him and grant him peace:

“Every intoxicant is forbidden.”
