Majmu' al-FatawaIbn Taimiya

He was asked—may Allah have mercy on him—about a man who had a son and asked him for enough to support himself.

He replied:

“If the son is well-to-do and his father is in need, he must provide enough to meet all his father’s needs. Likewise, if his siblings are unable to earn a living, he must support them if he can afford to do so. His father may take whatever he needs from his son’s wealth without his permission, and the son has no right to prevent him.”

He was asked—may Allah have mercy on him—about a man whose son possessed wealth, while the father was poor and had a family to support. His wife was not the mother of his grown son. Was the son obliged to support his father, his siblings, and his father’s wife?

He replied:

“If the father is unable to provide for them and the son is able to support them, then he must do so.”
