It is also established in the two Sahīh collections and elsewhere that the deceased hears the sound of their sandals as they turn and walk away. This accords with what has been stated, so how can it be rejected?
Some scholars hold that the deceased does not hear in his grave so long as he remains dead, as ‘Ā’ishah stated, citing evidence from the Quran. If Allah brings him to life, however, he hears, as Qatādah said: “Allah brought them to life for that purpose.” Even if they do not hear through that life, just as we do not see the angels and jinn, we do not know what the deceased experiences in his sleep. Likewise, a person does not know what is in another’s heart, although someone to whom Allah has disclosed it may know it.
This is a summary sufficient to answer the questioner’s inquiry, although further explanation and detail would be beyond the scope of this discussion. For the clear evidence we have cited concerning his question is rarely gathered together. Allah knows best. May Allah bless Muhammad, his family and his Companions, and grant them peace.
