Majmu' al-FatawaIbn Taimiya

In the two Sahīh collections, Anas ibn Mālik, may Allah be pleased with him, reported:

“The Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, left those slain at Badr for three days. Then he came to them, stood over them, and said: ‘O Abū Jahl ibn Hishām! O Umayyah ibn Khalaf! O ‘Utbah ibn Rabī‘ah! O Shaybah ibn Rabī‘ah! Have you not found what your Lord promised you to be true? I have indeed found what my Lord promised me to be true.’

‘Umar, may Allah be pleased with him, heard the Prophet’s words and asked: ‘O Messenger of Allah, how can they hear when their bodies have putrefied?’

He replied: ‘By Him in Whose hand is my soul, you hear what I say no better than they do, but they cannot answer.’ Then he ordered that they be dragged away and thrown into the well of Badr.”

Both compilers also recorded in their Sahīh collections the report of Ibn ‘Umar, may Allah be pleased with them both:

“The Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, stood beside the well of Badr and said: ‘Have you found what your Lord promised you to be true?’ He also said: ‘They can indeed now hear what I am saying.’

This was mentioned to ‘Ā’ishah, who said: ‘Ibn ‘Umar was mistaken. The Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, only said: “They now know that what I told them is the truth.”’ Then she recited the words of the Most High, ‘You cannot make the dead hear,’ continuing to the end of the verse.”

Scholars of hadith and the Sunnah agree that the reports narrated by Anas and Ibn ‘Umar are authentic, even though neither attended Badr. Anas narrated this from Abū Talhah, who did attend Badr.

Thus, Abū Hātim recorded in his Sahīh, from Anas, from Abū Talhah, may Allah be pleased with him:

“On the day of Badr, the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, ordered that twenty-four of the leading men of Quraysh be thrown into one of the stone-lined wells of Badr. Whenever he prevailed over a people, he liked to remain on their grounds for three nights:
