Majmu' al-FatawaIbn Taimiya

may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said:

“When a servant is laid in his grave and his companions turn away, he hears the sound of their sandals. Two angels come to him and question him, asking, ‘What did you used to say about this man, Muhammad?’ The believer replies, ‘I testify that he is Muhammad, Allah’s servant and Messenger.’” He said: “Then he says, ‘Look at your place in the Fire. Allah has replaced it for you with a place in Paradise.’” The Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said: “He sees them both.”

Qatādah said: “It was mentioned to us that his grave is made spacious for him by seventy cubits and filled with fresh delights until the Day they are resurrected.” Then we return to the hadith of Anas:

“They come to the disbeliever and the hypocrite and ask, ‘What did you used to say about this man?’ He replies, ‘I do not know. I used to say what people said.’ He is then told, ‘You neither knew nor recited!’ Then he is struck between his ears with iron hammers and lets out a scream that is heard by everyone on earth except humans and jinn.”

Al-Tirmidhī and Abū Hātim, in his Sahīh—with most of the wording being his—narrated from Abū Hurayrah, may Allah be pleased with him, who said:

“The Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said: ‘When one of you buries a person, two angels, black and blue in appearance, come to him. One is called Munkar and the other Nakīr. They ask him, “What did you used to say about this man, Muhammad?” He answers with what he used to say. If he is a believer, he says, “He is Allah’s servant and Messenger. I testify that there is no deity worthy of worship except Allah, and I testify that Muhammad is His servant and Messenger.” They say, “We knew that you would say that.” Then his grave is made spacious for him by seventy cubits and illuminated for him. He is told, “Sleep.” He says, “Let me return to my family and tell them.” They say to him, “Sleep like a bridegroom whom none but his most beloved family member awakens,” until Allah raises him from that resting place. But if he is a hypocrite, he says:
