Majmu' al-FatawaIbn Taimiya

(may Allah bless him and grant him peace) said:

“When any of you has finished the final tashahhud (testimony of faith), let him say, ‘I seek refuge in Allah from four things: the punishment of Hell, the punishment of the grave, the trials of life and death, and the trial of the false messiah, the Dajjāl.’”

In Sahīh Muslim and elsewhere, Ibn ‘Abbās (may Allah be pleased with them both) reports that the Prophet (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) used to teach them this supplication just as he would teach them a surah of the Quran:

“O Allah, I seek refuge in You from the punishment of Hell; I seek refuge in You from the punishment of the grave; I seek refuge in You from the trial of the false messiah, the Dajjāl; and I seek refuge in You from the trials of life and death.”

In Sahīh al-Bukhārī and Sahīh Muslim, Abū Ayyūb al-Ansārī said:

“The Prophet (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) went out after the sun had set and said, ‘Some Jews are being punished in their graves.’”

In the two Sahīh collections, ‘Ā’ishah (may Allah be pleased with her) said:

“An elderly Jewish woman from Medina came to me and said, ‘The people in the graves are being punished in their graves.’ I rejected what she said and could not bring myself to believe her. She left, and the Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) came to me. I said, ‘O Messenger of Allah, an elderly woman from Medina came to me and claimed that the people in the graves are being punished in their graves.’

“He replied, ‘She spoke the truth. They are indeed suffering a punishment that all animals can hear.’ After that, I never saw him pray without seeking refuge from the punishment of the grave.”

In the Sahīh of Abū Hātim al-Bustī, Umm Mubashshir (may Allah be pleased with her) said:

“The Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) came to me while I was in a garden, saying, ‘Seek refuge in Allah from the punishment of
